“<—-Yes, I walk around with a camera in tow even when attending posh dinners.  I’m just that dedicated to film.

Hi, I’m Mike.  I made a short film for a national film competition when I was 17, and I won in my age group. (Granted, the second-placed film consisted solely of a close-up of a fat mouth eating cake, which cheapened the victory rather.) Since then, I’ve had an ever-growing interest in using film to tell stories and recount events in creative, ambitious and enjoyable ways. This largely took the form of videos cut and set to music that show my experiences of days at school, a car exhibition and my school leavers’ ball, although I also tried my hand at recording, using three synchronised cameras, a music festival that took place at my school. That last one wasn’t so successful, but at least I tried!

Studying film at university has obviously developed my understanding of and enthusiasm for film, and in my second year I made a few ‘art films’ with Fine Art students from Coventry Uni. I’ve been constantly learning – where and how cuts are best used, how to best apply a camera’s functions, how best to plan and organise a shoot. I want to follow these up in my third year with a project completely under my creative control – and ideally it’ll be shot in 3D, but it’s difficult enough to put a 2D film together!

At the end of the day, I want to make films that people will find interesting and plain enjoyable. Otherwise they’ll never watch them. And that’s the point.”

Art Detection Services Ltd. from B-Side Empire on Vimeo.

“Art Detection Services was the idea of my co-writer and actor, Matt Moore, a student at Coventry University.  I took control of directing, editing and the soundtrack, and we shot it on a budget of £12 (we spent a tenner on petrol, plus I had a sandwich).  Ideally it’s meant to be seen in an art gallery, presented as a work of art itself, but we wanted it to work on its own.  Having taken it to a few festivals and film meets, we’re confident that it does.  Please let us know what you think – we’re very interested to hear what people make of it.”
